November News!

Our second trimester begins Monday, November 25 — which means we are almost 1/3 of the way through our dance year!

Winter weather is upon us, so please note the following guidelines for closures:

  • We follow the Spokane Schools closure calendar.

    • If school is cancelled, ballet classes are also cancelled.

    • If after-school activities are cancelled (i.e., the weather turns bad in the afternoon), ballet classes are also cancelled.

    • If school is delayed, afternoon classes run like normal unless otherwise communicated.

Regarding upcoming holidays, remember:

  • There are no classes on Monday, November 11 in honor of Veterans Day.

  • There are no classes Wednesday, November 27-Saturday, November 30 for Thanksgiving break.

While there are no dance classes during Thanksgiving break, Stephanie is leading a free Thanksgiving barre class at 9:30. Bring two or more cans of food, which will be donated to a local food pantry. Link to register below!

Our first trimester watch week is November 18-23. Scroll down for some helpful hints if this is your first one.

Speaking of trimesters…we are so excited to announce the birth of Miss Sara’s daughter! Malakai was born at 3:08 p.m. on Wednesday, October 30. We wish them both a special time at home together and are excited to welcome them back to the studio in the new year!

In our second trimester, we shift the focus from connection and technique to self-discipline and sequencing. Learning how to put discrete steps into a sequence requires a lot of mental and physical effort.

Executing full sequences — with excellent technique! — will help your dancer prepare for our May 19 production of Beauty and the Beast, an event we’re already preparing for behind the scenes! If you have not yet provided measurements, please reply to Stephanie’s 10/29 email so that we can finalize our costume order.

An additional opportunity to demonstrate a consolidation of dance skills in the spring is the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) examinations, open to ballet students in Grade 1 and up. Scroll for more information.

Looking ahead to next month, we have some holiday fun in store at the studio with a daytime Nutcracker Ballet Camp and an evening Nutcracker Night In. Register today!

Finally, as a reminder, 2nd trimester tuition is due on Monday, November 25. Invoices will be sent later this month. You can pay online by clicking the links on the invoice, or you can drop a check or cash payment into the box at the bottom of the stairs.

Watch Week Top Tips

  1. Enter the studio with your dancer. They will take their place in the center of the room or al the barre, and you may sit on the chairs provided along side wall of the studio; younger sibling may need to sit on laps if space is limited.

  2. Please refrain from being on your phone or working during class.

  3. No food is allowed in the studio.

  4. Be prepared to see that your dancer might be more timid -- or more energetic! -- when the grown-ups are in the room. :)

  5. Have fun watching all that your dancer has accomplished in the first 9 weeks of classes.

While you are at the studio, please check the lost and found bin in the basement. Everything will be donated to Global Neighborhood Thrift December 1! You are also welcome to take from or donate to the “Buy Nothing” baskets of leotards, skirts, tights and sweaters.

Throughout the year we offer thematic one-day camps and “Dancer Nights In” (alternatively know as a parent’s night out!) for dancers who are current students and for those who want to experience a dance class without a yearlong commitment. Offerings are advertised in our newsletter and on our website.

Little ones are invited to a magical afternoon with Miss Stephanie and her helper elves. We will create gift-ready crafts, do story yoga, and dance to everyone’s favorite holiday ballet! Parents, please arrive for pick-up at 2:55 so we can share a short performance piece with you. $40

Dancers ages 6-10 are invited to an evening of fun at the studio! After a Nutcracker ballet class, we will enjoy a pizza dinner and make some gift-ready crafts. We will wrap up the evening watching a filmed version of the New York City Ballet’s Nutcracker. No prior dance experience required. Bring a friend!

A NOTE ON EXAMS

One thing that makes our studio unique is that Ann is a registered teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD). Her status allows us to enter students for exams each Spring.

Exam students perform the curriculum that they are learning for an examiner sent by the RAD. It gives the dancers a goal to work towards, and they leave the exam feeling successful and proud of their accomplishment. We see a lot of growth in dancers that work towards their exam.

The exam is optional. There is an additional fee, and there are a few extra practices that your dancer can attend.

Please contact Ann directly at 951-293-2331 with any questions or to let her know that your dancer would like to participate in exams this year.

Gratefully,

Ann & Stephanie
