October Newsletter

Hello, October!

The air is crisp, and the school year routines are settling into place. Thank you for making Sandra’s Studio of Dance part of your family’s weekly routine!

One quick request: Please clean up after yourself in the waiting room. Trash needs to go in the bathroom trash can, and any books you have taken from the dressing room need to be reshelved where you found them.

Classes remain as scheduled for Friday, October 11, even though it is a school break for Spokane Public Schools. We follow the SPS calendar only for major breaks (i.e., Thanksgiving, Winter Break, and Spring Break), observed federal holidays, and weather-related closures.

We realize you might miss class due to sickness or a family obligation. You can make up with a class that is the same level, or a level above or below. Feel free to send the studio an email about absences and/or makeups, but you may also text the teachers directly:

  • Stephanie Gronholz (Monday and Thursday afternoons): 720-254-5023

  • Ann Eldore (Monday evenings, Tuesdays, Wednesdays): 951-293-2331

  • Marty Newell-Large (Thursday evening ballet): 509-475-9925

  • Sara Stradley Wright (Saturday ballet): 509-499-1559

  • Caroline Zoretic (contemporary): 509-449-3370

  • Angie Brown (tap): 509-368-1469

Our two key words for the first trimester are community and technique. It’s been so rewarding to see the dancers create connections with one another while they learn and refine the techniques that are appropriate to their dance form. We intentionally do not teach complex sequences at this point in the year so that we can focus instead on executing simple steps with excellence.

Towards the end of the month, we’ll celebrate our sense of community with our first Spirit Week, and on October 26, we have two special events for two different age groups. Scroll down for more details about our Halloween Ballet Camp and Halloween-themed Dance Night In, plus some special events at local universities!

Spirit Week!

We invite all dancers to wear a costume — Halloween or otherwise! — between October 25 and October 31. Please ensure that the costume does not limit movement or visibility. Appropriate dance shoes must be worn, and ballet dancers’ hair must be pulled back.

Throughout the year we offer thematic one-day camps and “Dancer Nights In” (alternatively know as a parent’s night out!) for dancers who are current students and for those who want to experience a dance class without a yearlong commitment. Offerings are advertised in our newsletter and on our website.

Little ones are invited to a magical (and only slightly spooky) afternoon with Miss Stephanie. We will create Halloween crafts, do story yoga, and dance like ghosts, bats, zombies, and spiders...oh my! Parents, please arrive for pick-up at 2:55 so we can share a short performance piece with you. $40

Dancers ages 6-10 are invited to an evening of fun at the studio! After a Halloween-themed ballet class, we will enjoy a pizza dinner and watch a version of Coppelia that combines live, professional dancers with animation. It's a story about dancing dolls that come to life -- nothing too scary, but it's in the spirit of the season! No prior dance experience required.

Save the date for a Nutcracker Camp and Nutcracker Night In on December 14!

Whitworth is hosting a kids cheer camp, and Gonzaga has a lot happening in their dance department. Come see Miss Caroline in this weekend’s 60x60 show! Click each image for more information.

Gratefully,

Ann & Stephanie
