April Newsletter

With only six weeks of classes remaining before our end-of-year recital, we’ve got lots of information to share. Save this email for future reference!

First, a reminder that there will be no tap classes April 1 or April 2. Miss Angie is holding a combined makeup class on Saturday, April 19 (3:15-4:00 Beginners, 3:45-4:30 Intermediate, 5:15-6:15 Advanced).

We take Spring Break the same week as Spokane School District 81, so there are no classes Monday, April 7 - Saturday, April 12. on Saturday, April 5, the open classes will combine for a single class from 9:30-10:45.

Our third and final watch week happens this month, from Monday, April 21-Saturday, April 26. You will see the results of the hard work your dancers have put in this year, and you’ll get a sneak peek of the recital. (If you’d rather keep the recital piece a surprise, you can leave before we start rehearsing!)

Please note that on Sunday, April 27, there will be an extra rehearsal from 1:00-2:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Spokane (4340 W. Whistalks Way, near SFCC) for all dancers in the Market and “Be Our Guest” scenes. This includes Grades 1, 2, 5, Intermediate Foundation, and the main cast.

Everyone performing in the recital is expected to attend the May 3 dress rehearsal. Scroll down for more details, including volunteer opportunities. Volunteering backstage is a really special way to experience the recital with your dancer!

Beauty and the Beast Ballet Camp is filling up fast! Dancer’s Night In for children ages 7-11 is also open for registration. Scroll down for the links to register. Our summer program is also open for registration, and our website is updated with this information. And for the grown-ups? Angie is offering a second 5-week tap workshop from April 14-May 12. Join us during your lunch break from 11-noon.

Finally, for those of you who like to plan, you’ll be happy to see a preview of our 2025-2026 dance class schedule, below! Registration opens to current students and friends on April 15, and it will be posted to our website on May 1. We do not automatically re-enroll, and registration is first come-first served, so please submit a new registration form as soon as possible to ensure a spot in class.

Saturday, May 3 Dress Rehearsal

  • Location: Unitarian Universalist Church of Spokane, located at 4340 W. Whistalks Way, at the corner of Government Way. There is ample parking. (This is not The Unity Church by Comstock!)

  • Time: Rehearsal begins at 9:00 a.m. sharp. Please plan to arrive 10 minutes early. Pre-ballet dancers will be done at 9:30 a.m., Pre-Primary will be done at 10:00 a.m., and Primary and beginning tap will be done by 10:30 a.m. Everyone else will be released at 12:00 noon.

  • Volunteers will escort dancers to a separate location in the church for their group pictures and will bring Pre-Ballet, Pre-Primary and Primary dancers back to the foyer by the times indicated above.

  • This is a closed rehearsal, so parents will not be allowed to watch unless they are volunteering.

What makes this a dress rehearsal?

  • Dancers need to wear their costumes and clean tights. (We do, however, recommend saving the tights that came with the costume for recital day!)

  • Wear your street shoes into the building. Bring your ballet shoes in a dance bag or small bag. Pointe dances and character dances will be done on flat, and tappers can dance in jazz shoes or grippy socks. If you haven’t yet done so, please write your dancer’s name on their shoes. :)

  • Ballet dancers’ hair should be in a bun; short hair needs to be slicked back with pins and gel, if possible. Any hair accessory that came with the costume can be placed on the top of the head at the base of the bun.

  • Feel free to send a book or other clean, quiet activity with your child. They are welcome to drink water, but food of any kind is not allowed in the rehearsal space.

For our dress rehearsals and recital, we rely on the support of our parent community. We need one parent per class to supervise the dancers in their designated seating areas during dress rehearsals and be backstage in the green rooms during the actual recital.

Remember, our May 3 rehearsal is a closed rehearsal where no parents are allowed, so if you volunteer, you get a sneak peek of the recital. Volunteers ALSO get to save up to 6 seats for their family members, which is normally a privilege reserved for dance teachers and graduating seniors! And watching your little ones from the stage is actually a pretty magical experience. :)

If you are able to help, please let MacKenzie Koppa, our volunteer coordinator, know by submitting the form below.

Here’s a preview of next year’s schedule!!! Your child’s teacher will share their recommendations during watch week, but if you have any questions about placement until then, please let us know.

Need a body liner? If you have more than one costume, you need this base layer so that your costume changes can happen quickly.

These are also great for dancers who feel like their costumes are itchy.

We’ve got a style in stock in our Nimbly store that comes in several different shades to suit you!

Gratefully,

Ann & Stephanie
